People should (a) stop being offensive with obviously derrogatory terms and (b) stop whining about "someone said white, that's not PC." Seriously people? LOL ;-)

As for the other races, the Census puts down all names that a significant group of the population has written in for their own races in the past. For instance, for black the choices are "black, african american, or negro." All one category. On the 2000 census, almost 100,000 WROTE IN that they identified as negro, so the Census included that on the form this year. I do see where you're coming from with the caucasion/arfican american/whatever...PC terms are way too much to keep up with.

@MarcinP2 Knowing your ethnicity now has to do with the funding and redistricting of minority programs, housing loans, educational services, needs based services, etc. As for why they originally wanted it, I don't know. But it was one of the original questions asked on the Census...and asking for your race is explicitly protected in the Constitution. And since most white people aren't from the mountains of Caucas, most of them aren't caucasion anyway.

@chatte99 Finally if I might ask: why is it important FOR ANY GOV PROGRAM (emphasis) to know your ETHNICITY.(Let's skip over the fact the use of "caucasian" as defined by census bureau is a redefinition and reveals they probably just wanted to avoid using the more appropriate "white/black/yellow" since THAT would be OFFENDING ;) ). |
