I can tell you exactly why George Bush welcomed President Karimov to the White House. The Americans had just recently restarted a proposal to build the Trans-Afghanistan Pipeline which would carry 30 billion cubic metres of natural gas from Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan to India. This was originally proposed by Unocal under CentGas which had on its board of directors one George Herbert Bush.
