@purplemonkeyelephant You can see something similiar when you pour water on a hot hot pan... Or molten steel into a bucket of water... Thermite is certainly hot enough to not only transform the ice from solid to gas but hot enough, apparently, to do so quick enough to appear explosive.

Wouldnt such intense heat vaporize the ice so quickly that it would have to explode? Or is that far too simple of an explanation?
