I would not be familiar with the song being used as a "football chant". I think that it is used more as an anthem.Would I be hurt if it was a chant? Not really, because it is a nice melody. Do I think that it disrepects history to have it sung at football matches? No.It is such a nice song that it already gained wings and will be adapted to suit more occasions.I will hum it away tonight and tomorrow.

@patrickspoint mate, in the late 1800`s there was only dublin and cork that had more irish born catholics living there than liverpool, there were more irish catholics living in liverpool than even belfast.liverpool is the only city on the mainland to elect an irish nationalist MP and it is the birthplace of an irish national hero - james larkin.even the name `scouser` was given to the irish by scandanavian seamen working out of liverpool ( lobskause = scandanavian version of irish stew)

@poetsdontknowit... As you rightly say, one of the reasons for so many Irish in Liverpool is because of the Famine. To escape the Famine they first had to sail to Liverpool and then on to the USA or Australia. Many of them, arriving in Liverpool, found they had been scammed, their onward ticket wasn't valid. So, with no money, they couldn't go forward or back. They were stuck in Liverpool, destitute.
