@akjorlaug1 I don't know if there is an ongoing debate on this discussion board for this particularly song - as important as the C v A debate is - can't the two groups put that aside and just soak up the warmth and depth and beauty this song conveys.

For those debating the Calvinist vs. Arminian message of this hymn, remember that Wesley (both Charles and John) believed that there was a process of salvation. If you read all six stanzas of the hymn, you see that process clearly. This hymn does not proclaim salvation to all, but that all have the opportunity to receive salvation. The hymn is a story and instructions of how Wesley himself found his assurance of salvation.

@mrmiltonalmeida As a Methodist Pastor and scholar, I must say that is a lot of revisionist history there.

@igeku And I could give you plenty more verses that go against the 5 points of T.U.L.I.P.

@igeku I am not talking to you! "The Lord is not willing that ANY should perish but that ALL should come to repentence". However, He gave man a will and some DO perish but you calvinists don't believe in the free will of man. God chose to give man a free will. Methodists are not historically reformed or calvinistic.
