To work from home as a self-employed contractor or freelancer is fast becoming a very popular way to make a living. It is not for everyone because it has its own set of rewards and challenges. People choose to work from home for many reasons. Some of the reasons people choose working from home is because it is the only choice they have. Others want something different out of their career life. Keep in mind that this article is specifically for the person considering a home-based business. Here are a few reasons why many choose and prefer to work from home.
Some work from home due to a job loss. No longer can you expect to work for the same employer for most or your entire career and retire with a handsome pension from them. Corporations are too dynamic these days. More than likely, you will be the victim of an office or plant closing. Then there is the problem of job loss due to offshoring. Many who work from home are those who see the job loss as and opportunity to start this new way of working.
Some work from home to make more money. If there was not the potential to make more money, most would not even try to work from home. But you must understand the difference between making more money and the potential to make more money. You will more than likely (in fact you can just about bet on it) struggle for one to two years when you first start out working from home. Remember that you are actually a business now and all the rules and realities of business apply. You will have to market and find clients. You may have to get some loans. You will find good clients but wont know how to spot the bad clients who will hamper your cash flow. You just dont know when starting out but if you stick to your plan adjusting it for what works and what doesnt, eventually the money should start getting better.
Some work from home because of a disability. This is situational and it depends on the disability but many have been able to turn their challenges into opportunities. For example, a person who has frequent doctor or therapy appointments because of a disability might do well working in a situation where it can be from home and the hours are flexible. In other words, the person can go to their appointments when they need to and finish the work for their client when they arrive home. You have to get creative in this area but no longer does a disability always keep a person from realizing full career potential.
Some work from home because of few employment opportunities. You may live in area where there are just not too many opportunities for employment in your line of work yet the internet allows you to expand your market. For example, lets say you specialize as a Spanish translator but live in Southeast Asia. There are not many employers hiring Spanish translators in Southeast Asia however because of the internet, a person is no longer restricted to a geographical location to do his or her work.
Some work from home to care for family. To work from home is a solution for a single mother or father who has skills that allow this type of endeavor. For example, some single parents have skills as a writer and to work from home is a real possibility and allows them to be there for their children.
