Who is Best-Suited for Working from Home?
With corporate downsizing taking place frequently today, it is very possible that you could find yourself without a job one day due to an unforeseen layoff. Of course you have unemployment insurance available to you during this period but the pay that you will get from that is meager at best. It is precisely during this time of job loss that many seek to work from home because of the perks like time flexibility and the opportunity to define your career path. Plus, there is the potential to make good money when you work from home if you manage your business right.
But not everyone is suited to work from home so you must take a personal inventory of your skills and personality to determine if you are a candidate to work at home. The home worker being discussed here is the self-employed freelancer. We are not referring to the regular employee working for a company who is allowed to telecommute although many of the principles apply to this situation too. Here are a few tips to consider.
You must have a skill that allows work from home. Not every skill is a good fit to work at home. Usually, those who can write, program computers, do graphic art, transcribe, and translate are those who will find the most opportunities to work at home. The internet has made it quite possible for professionals in these areas to take orders for the work, do the work, deliver it, and receive payment while never meeting the client on the other end.
You must have patience. Working from home is not a get-rich-quick scheme. Anyone who tries to promote a work at home opportunity that promises income that is too good to be true is more than likely pulling a scam on you. There are going to be periods of time when the work does not come in and you have to be prepared to weather the storm. It takes time to find out what works and what does not work in your new self-employment adventure. Remember that when you are working for yourself and working from home that it is a business—your business. Businesses are dynamic and require changes in strategy as external conditions change.
You must have discipline. When working from home, there are many distractions that can keep you from focusing on the project at hand. You have to establish your boundaries with everyone you share your home with. The best home office environments are where the person has a separate office area. Sometimes that is not possible but you will know what works best for you. Some can have a television playing while they do their work—others cannot. Only you know. But you have to be able to focus on your work when it is time to work and treat it like a job.
All those advertisements you see where the “work at home entrepreneur” having loads of free time and more money than possible to spend are not realistic. Many who work at home find they work harder than they ever have before and make very little money in the first years. But if you keep your skills up-to-date and maintain your focus, working at home can be a very rewarding period in your life and it can open doors a regular employer may never open to you.
